How to Size MUTO Sliding Glass Door Panels and Sidelites

Precision glass sizing is essential for flawless MUTO sliding door installations.

Key Terms & Definitions

  • CW (Clear Width):
    The opening between two fixed panels (sidelites) or a fixed panel and a wall. It’s NOT the opening when the door is pulled open but the finished opening when the door is closed.

  • CH (Clear Height):
    The finished vertical distance from floor to underside of track/header.

  • DW (Door Width):
    The total width of the sliding panel.

    • For a single door (wall or glass mount):
      DW = CW + 2-3/8" (2.375")

    • For a single door with 2 fixed panels or closing against jamb:
      DW = CW + 1-3/16" (1.1875")

    • For a bi-parting double door (glass mount):
      DW = CW ÷ 2 + 1-1/16" (1.0625"), plus 1/4" (0.250") gap between panels, for each door
      DW = [CW + 0.25"] ÷ 2 + 1-1/16" (1.0625")

  • GH (Glass Height):
    GH = CH + 7/8" (0.875"), allows hardware clearance.

  • FPW (Fixed Panel Width):
    For one sidelite: FPW = RO - CW
    For two sidelites: FPW1 = FPW2 = (RO - CW)/2
    (RO = rough opening width)

  • Overlap:
    The extra width the door extends beyond CW, determined by bottom door guide and mounting type.

Panel Sizing Table (Imperial Fractions & Decimals)

Model Min DW (in, dec.) Max DW (in, dec.) Min FPW Max FPW Max GH Glass Thickness Max Panel Weight
XL 150 / XL 80 26" (26.000") 57" (57.000") 23-5/8" (23.625") 54-5/8" (54.625") 118" (118.000") 5/16"-9/16" (0.3125"-0.5625") 330 / 176 lbs
XL 120 SC 33-1/2" (33.500") 57" (57.000") 23-5/8" (23.625") 54-5/8" (54.625") 118" (118.000") 5/16"-9/16" (0.3125"-0.5625") 264 lbs

Example 1: Single Door and One Sidelite (Wall/Glass Mount)

RO: 108"
CW: 42"
DW = 42" + 2-3/8" = 44-3/8" (44.375")
FPW = RO - CW = 108" - 42" = 66" (66.000")
GH: If CH = 96", GH = 96" + 0.875" = 96.875"

Example 2: Bi-Parting (Double) Doors

RO: 120"
CW: 72"
Each door:
DW = [72" + 0.25"] ÷ 2 + 1-1/16" = (72.25 ÷ 2) + 1.0625 = 36.125" + 1.0625" = 37.1875" (37-3/16")
FPW1 = FPW2 = (120" - 72") ÷ 2 = 24" (24.000")

Note: For glass mount formulas, use the double door formula shown in the attached images:

  • Double Door Glass Mount (XL, L):
    DW = CW + 2 + 1-1/16" (27mm)

Tips for Success

  • Maintain a 1/4" gap between bi-parting panels for proper clearance.

  • Always check the latest dormakaba technical guide for your system and project.

  • Match glass thickness across all panels.

  • Strictly follow these formulas to ensure the door sits correctly in the guide and operates smoothly.

FAQs

Q1: Why must bi-parting designs include a 1/4" gap?
To avoid panel collision and ensure smooth, reliable operation per manufacturer spec.

Q2: Is it OK to mix panel thicknesses?
No; always use the same thickness for fit and durability.

Q3: What’s the maximum recommended door height?
118" (118.000") for all premium models.

Q4: Where do I find full technical details?
See the official MUTO Technical Brochure on dormakaba.com.
